It’s late within the morning on Group USA’s first off-day of the 2022 world juniors and Landon Slaggert is winding down in his room on the Cambridge Purple Deer Resort.
With a while to kill between his 10 a.m. breakfast and midday lunch earlier than he heads off to apply, he’s obtained his cellphone to his ear.
He’s reflecting, pausing for a second to reminisce about his journey from two-hour drives from South Bend, Ind., to Chicago for hockey rising up, to this second on the world stage with a chance to win his second gold medal in as a few years.
It wasn’t that way back, he remembers, that he was watching, wide-eyed, as members of the Chicago Blackhawks stepped off the ice or walked by way of the car parking zone on the apply facility they shared along with his minor hockey crew, the Chicago Mission. Now he’s a third-round choose of these Blackhawks who has skated a few occasions with Jonathan Toews, one of many gamers he used to observe funnel out.
